오늘은 태권도 정신 ‘염치’가 도장 밖에서 어떤 의미를 갖는가를 공부해보자.

[본문]
Everyday outside the dojang, you are faced with all kinds of challenges to your integrity. Although, you may not identify yourself as a taekwondo practitioner wearing a T-shirt, saying "Taekwondo practitioner in training," you still have responsibilities and obligations in daily life, too.

Let's say, you get an extra five from the cashier because he miscounted the changes or your friend asks you to look the other way while she shoplifts lipstick. What would you do if these kinds of small challenges happened to you?

You would decide "everyone's doing it and it doesn't make any difference any way." But it does make a difference. You'll know you're not acting with integrity. The fact is that taekwondo practitioners are representing their art and their school even when they're outside the dojang.

You wouldn't want to embarrass your art or school by behaving in any way that may be considered dishonorable, unethical, or lacking in integrity. To have true integrity, you have to act in the right way even about these small challenges. Understanding these responsibilities and taking them seriously is important in taekwondo training.  

[해설]
매일 도장 밖에서 (수련생) 여러분의 ‘염치’와 관계된 다수의 도전을 받게 됩니다. 비록 여러분이 “교육중인 태권도 수련생”이라고 씌어 있는 티셔츠를 입고 (다니면서) 자신이 태권도 수련자라는 것을 밝히지는 않지만 여러분은 일상생활에서도 (태권도인으로서) 책임과 의무가 있습니다.

예를 들어, 계산하는 사람이 거스름돈을 잘못 계산해서 여러분이 5달러를 더 받게 되었거나 여러분의 친구가 (가게에서) 립스틱을 훔치면서 망을 봐달라고 합니다. 만일 이러한 작은 도전(유혹)이 일어나면 여러분은 어떻게 하겠습니까?

여러분은 “다른 사람도 그렇게 하니까 (그렇게 해도) 별반 달라질 것은 없다”라고 결정할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 (여러분의 행동은) 변화를 줄 수 있습니다. 여러분은 여러분이 염치없이 행동한 것을 알게 될 것입니다. (중요한) 사실은 태권도 수련생들은 자신의 무술과 도장을 도장밖에서도 대표한다는 것입니다.

불명예스럽고, 비윤리적이고, 염치없는 것으로 간주되는 행동을 하여 여러분의 무술이나 학교를 부끄럽게 하기를 원치 않을 것입니다. 진정한 염치란 이러한 작은 도전에서부터 여러분이 올바르게 행동하는 것입니다. 이러한 책임을 이해하고 심각하게 대하는 것은 태권도 수련에 중요한 (요소) 입니다.

[풀이]
be faced with~=~을 직면하다; all kinds of challenges=(모든 종류의) 다수의 도전(시험); to your integrity=여러분의 염치에 (관계되어); ; identify yourself as=여러분 자신을 ~로 신원을 밝히다; wearing a T-shirt=티셔츠를 입고서 (관계절로 선행사 a taekwondo practitioner를 꾸며주고 있다); saying~=~라고 씌어 있는 (역시 관계절로 a T-shirt를 수식하고 있다): "Taekwondo practitioner in training"=“수련중인 태권도 수련생”;  in daily life=일상 생활속에서; Let's say=상상해보자 하고 할 때 쓰는 말; get an extra five=(dollar bill)이란 말이 생략된 말로, 5달러를 거저 얻게 되었다는 말이다; miscounted the change=거스름돈을 잘못 세다; look the other way=다른 곳을 쳐다보다(망을 보다) shoplifts lipstick=립스틱을 (가게에서)슬쩍하다; The fact is that=that 이하의 사실은 (중요하다); your art=여러분의 무술; by behaving in any way=다음과 같이 행동함으로; that may be considered=~로 여기지는; to have true integrity=진정한 염치가 있다는 것은; even about~=~관해 조차; taking them seriously=그것들을 심각하게 여기는 것.
